Timken static stress and bearing life Query

Ed, the bearing steel has a strength of around 300,000 psi. If the contact stress roller/raceway is higher, you start getting plastic deformations, although at 350,000 psi they will be very small. I assume this is where you first warning is coming from. The static capacity of a roller bearing is...

What is the basis for a max. oil temp of 194F?

Bearing components are typically tempered at 325 degF, dimensional stability shouldn't be an issue below that temperature. For operation above that, the tempering temperature must be adjusted and hot-hardness can affect bearing capacity depending on the bearing steel used. Bearing life greatly...

Bearing fully submerged in hydraulic oil

MikeHalloran is correct. The roller bearings in hydraulic gear pumps do indeed run fully submerged in hydraulic oil and work well despite the low viscosity of the hydraulic oil, which implies a low film thickness. Typical speed is 1800 rpm at loads of several thousand lbf. The load cycles on and...

    Thrust Bearing Binding

You didn't say how fast you are going to run the assembly. Typically, thrust bearings, especially needle roller types, should always be loaded to prevent skidding. Standard practice is adding a (soft) belleville spring of proper size and load/deflection characteristics after thrust bearing #2.

    pre-loaded bearings

preload may also be required for bearings seeing high acceleration to avoid slipping (and wear) of the rolling elements.
