if the laptop has a dedicated graphics card can we change it to SW approved grahics card, will the laptop still work fine

Did anyone use other than the SW approved cards like NVIDIA GEOFORCE cards and did they have any problems? The reason I am asking as these cards are dedicated 256-512mb should it not be enough memory to run the software.
