    Proximity effect + modeling software

I'm working on evaluating software to analyze eddy current coils (wound like chokes). Many of them do not account for the self inductance proximity effect that wound coils experience with A-C signals. Skin effect is not a concern at my frequency but proxmity effect is, I've measured it and...

    Best steel for DC electromagnet

EdStainless, Actually I have two projects. One is A-C the other is D-C.

    Best steel for DC electromagnet

Thanks guys, My application is A-C and I'm looking to create a high Q sensor coil. I need to machine the metal to a particular size so standard cup-core ferrite is out of the question.

    Best steel for DC electromagnet

Thanks all remetaper: Do you have a title for the paper? I can't locate it. BobM3: Good link, will consider the material. dgallup: Thanks for the 12L14 suggestion. My test house reccommended that also. Steve

    Best steel for DC electromagnet

Sorry for the jumbled thread here, the material also needs to be machinable from 2-3" bar stock.

    Best steel for DC electromagnet

Also, cost is not important but availability for prototype and research activities is.

    Best steel for DC electromagnet

BobM3, Good point. I'm looking for high permeability so I can get the strongest flux density for a given number of turns and current. Environment is not important because the part will be encapsulated. I'm not sure about saturation though. I'd probably start with permeability as the metric...

    Best steel for DC electromagnet

All, I've read a number of threads that indicate 1018 steel annealed and 430 stainless are commonly used for solonoids. My design problem is to pick the best material for a DC electromagnet. Would sombody please recommend a material, either one of the two I mentioned or something different...

    B-H measurement

Ed, Thanks. Would you have a couple of company names of the top of your tonge in the U.S. I could look up? A few of the key words I tried on Google and this forum didn't connect with any solid hits. I doing a research experiment and am not sure if I can characterize a sensor response and...

    B-H measurement

EdStainless: Thank you. Can I generate a B-H curve using experimental apparatus or does it need to be done to some standard on standardized equipment? I have an LCR meter, several coils, and a gauss meter. MagMike: I guess I'm still comming up to speed in this area of physics. Maybe I...

Hot dip galvanizing of carbon steel

Good discussion all. Would somebody versed in the art provide a brief explanation on: (1) Organic zinc: +/- attributes (metallic?) (2) Inorganic zinc: +/- attributes and what is it. (3) Why zinc and why not something more electronegative such as magnesium or something less electronegaive...

Hot dip galvanizing of carbon steel

SJones, thank you. That was my suspicion, now confirmed. I guess unfortunately the trade-off is that there is little binder left for adhesion.

    B-H measurement

Would someone please enlighten me on how a B-H curve is generated for an unknown material? Also, for the relative permeability number that one sometimes finds published. Thank you.

Hot dip galvanizing of carbon steel

dcfrush provided a good explaination. My question to dcfrush is with the zinc rich primer. The inorganic zinc (i.e. metallic particles) that is added to primers would seem to me to be fully encapsulated by the polymer matrix in the primer, expecially with a low VOC or two part epoxy system...

    Analytical modeling options

Thank you. Also, when you mean "more responses in the magnetic forum" the one we are in now was the only one I found on this site. Are you referring to another site, perhaps Yahoo?

    Analytical modeling options

Folks, I'm just looking for a few opinions (as I believe endorsements are not appropriate here)for some modeling software. My problem is designing an A.C. inductive coil sensor that gets loaded by nearby metals. I'd like to model the complex impedance response and determine magnetic shielding...
