    Stress engineer in the US

Where are you located? That makes a huge difference.

    SolidWorks Simulation fails

@kellnerp Why do you go with 3-2-1 constraining? Is it so you can do a hand calc with the same setup? FEA doesn't care if it statically indeterminate, right? Also, shouldn't the BCs be setup how the real life model is? I'm not correcting you, just trying to learn why, because from the other...

    ProE Mechanical Memory Allocation

@otsy Have you tried changing your SOLRAM setting much lower (like 128MB)? Your model isn't very big and I am pretty sure the only reason it is taking 8.5GB of memory is because you have your SOLRAM set at 7000MB.

How to figure computing time into cost proposal

As I was thinking about how much computing time is spent running analysis jobs on 2nd, 3rd and 4rth computers while actively setting up another FEA job on a main computer, I wondered how consultants factor that computing time into their cost proposals. How do you charge for that? As an FEM...

    NEi Nastran Optimization

Does anyone have experience using NEi Nastran for optimization, specifically using the Advanced Optimization module HEEDS? If so, have you used it to change parameters used for geometry dimensions, number of geometry features, and other parameters from the CAD model or just to change parameters...

    NEi Nastran comparable to ANSYS?

trainguy, thanks for your response. Do you have much experience using contacts in NEi Nastran? If so are you pleased with it's ability to handle complex contact setups? I'm going to demo it but I also wanted other peoples opinions. Thanks.

    NEi Nastran comparable to ANSYS?

I'm curious what people's thoughts are about whether NEi Nastran (with FEMAP) is comparable to ANSYS? You can base it on whatever metrics you like, but some examples would be usability, ease of pre/post processing, solver speed, robustness, limitations, user community, technical support...

So I didn't get the job, because a question that I asked.

zer0c123, was this company in Davis California? I had a very similar experience right out of school. I was offered the job but declined because a different mechanical engineering job also gave me an offer at the same time (and this job was ACTUALLY mechanical, not software).

Value of learning FEM theory vs mastering engineering

"a major problem with FE is that it gives you an answer, no matter how you state your problem another problem with FE is that it won't give you an answer no matter how you state the problem" haha. Very True.

Value of learning FEM theory vs mastering engineering

Again, good points. Those scenarios are indeed frustrating. You make the same argument against eng-tips though. Lot's of people us it as a crutch instead of trying something out for themselves first. Or they see someone state something and take that as the answer without fully...

Value of learning FEM theory vs mastering engineering

ESPcomposites, Thanks for your answer. I absolutely agree with what you listed as some of the downsides to FEA. What I maintain is that people who use it as a crutch or have overconfidence in their results are probably bad engineers, FEA or no FEA. I see a lot of throwing the baby out with...

Value of learning FEM theory vs mastering engineering

GregLocock, I just wanted to add that my previous post was not just about your specific comment and more about that comment reminding me of a sentiment that I see a lot on eng-tips posts. I very much appreciate the posts that put up and you taking the time to participate in the thread I...

Value of learning FEM theory vs mastering engineering

"It'd be interesting to estimate how many hours are wasted due to mechanisms, boundary conditions, chasing little patches of red, rigid links and dubious load applications, compared with these more theoretical issues." Probably the same amount of time spent figuring out where you got your...

Restarting Mechanica analysis after losing network license

Does anyone know if there is a way to get a Mechanica analysis to resume once it has lost it's network license half way through the run? I've had Mechanica stop mid run, due to the license servers temporarily going down, a few times, and even though Pro/E quickly picks the license back up...

    ProE Mechanical Memory Allocation

seymours2571, You are right. I miss read your post, you did state that you were talking about memory allocation. I would think that that limitation wouldn't matter so much since upping SOLRAM value does not seem to help performance. Agreed about your RAMdisk comments. I have yet to use a...

Value of learning FEM theory vs mastering engineering

ESPcomposites, I'm sorry I should have been clearer in my opening post. My question was towards people who routinely use FEA and wish to improve themselves through studying/learning more. If you do use FEA routinely and want to improve yourself as an analyst which is more practical to spend...

Value of learning FEM theory vs mastering engineering

Given that each engineer only has a finite amount of time, how would you rate the value of learning the FEM theory vs mastering engineering principles? I could see the answer varying depending on what your job is, Designer, Analyst, Researcher, but I think it would be interesting to get a...

    Modal Analysis & Mesh Size

The mesh size will be a contributing factor up to a point. The point where increasing mesh density changes the results little is where it stops mattering. Usually with Mechanica increasing the Polynomial order of the mesh will allow the results to converge. What convergence method are you...

    Hertz contact stresses

If you set up a contact analysis then contact pressure would probably be what you are looking for. When you make your contacts Mechanica automatically creates force and area measures for each contact. The results for these measures can be seen in your run status summary (*.rpt file). To see a...

    FEA on Assemblies???

Do you have a Mechanica License? If not you are probably using Mechanica Lite, which is limited to parts/assemblies with less than 200 surfaces.
