Dry lubrication and corrosion prevention of ACME screw in dusty location

Some random ideas: Make the screw from a polymer. Perhaps Delrin/acetal? Use cast or sintered metal that has lubrication built into the compound during manufacturing? Use a different mechanism that may be enclosed in a gearbox? Mechatronics Engineer from South Africa.

how can I calculate the efficiency of worm gear system?

Maybe this will help you on your way: http://www.roymech.co.uk/Useful_Tables/Drive/Worm_Gears.html Mechatronics Engineer from South Africa.

    Locking fastners in plastic

We currently use M6 knurled brass threaded inserts in an injection molded glass filled nylon base to mount a small electric DC motor, similar to types used in electric wheelchairs. The threaded inserts are fitted using a heating element (basically a modified soldering iron). The problem is that...

    Submersible Nylon cable ties

How about looking at the rapstrap? http://www.rapstrap.com/ Not sure if it will be strong enough though. Made from elasticated polyurethane Adriaan. I am a Mechatronics Engineer from South Africa. www.martin-electronics.co.za

    Turner or Machinist

I have heard "fitter & turner" or just "turner" used to describe people who do many types of machining work but always including the use of manually operated lathes and milling machines. I have heard "machinist" used to describe people who operate many other machines as well, but especially CNC...

    Homemade CNC

I agree completely with John: A screw thread ("V" or Whitworth etc...) has a tendency to bind, whereas the ACME thread promotes sliding even under load. Adriaan. I am a Mechatronics Engineer from South Africa. www.martin-electronics.co.za

    Using "Touch" mice on SolidWorks

I have not used the MS touch mice, but I have had the misfortune of using mice without a scroll wheel or middle button. If the middle button does not work, you can easily remap the functions to keyboard buttons but it then forces you to have both hands busy all the time (I like doing CAD with...

    Result of Stacking 2 fans

If you can accommodate two fans on top of one another, then just use a stronger fan with a larger motor! For example, for computer fans, the vantec tornado fan is 92x92x38mm instead of the usual 92x92x25mm to accommodate the larger (thicker) motor Adriaan. I am a Mechatronics Engineer from...

Improving longevity of rubber keypad (access control etc...)

How can the life span of a silicone rubber keypad, as used for access control systems, be improved? These are exterior control panels but are sealed against all elements except temperature changes and sunlight. I assume one way would be to reduce the stroke? Would it be advisable to go for a...

Hypoid gear vendor/mfr in North Texas?

Are you saying the audible noise is too high or the vibrational/electrical noise received by the controller/motor is too high? Either way, I agree with the above, worm drives are usually very smooth and quiet. What materials are you using? Steel on steel can 'bite' and get a bit bumpy... A...

    Worm face gear info/theory?

WinstonH, Thank you so much. That was very helpful. I thought there may be another term used to describe such a gear set! Thank you again! Adriaan. I am a Mechatronics Engineer from South Africa. www.martin-electronics.co.za

    Worm face gear info/theory?

Where can I find more information on "worm face gearsets"? See one depicted here: http://www.stepanlunin.com/Worm_face_C.html It uses a standard cylindrical worm as used in a normal worm drive setup - this is important as we have this part threadrolled and cannot change it. We have a product...
