concentrated load of edge of beam flange

spats thanks That is one of the ways i looked at it and I get about 7 ksi which is plenty good compared to 27 ksi. I guess Im still a little concerned with deflection at the fee edge of the flange but not sure how to estimate/caculate this. I may be overthinking this, but I am thinking if it...

concentrated load of edge of beam flange

I have a concentrated load of 5000 lb. on the edge of a beam.I am trying to calculate/estimate what localized effect it has on the beam flange. Torsion on the overall beam is low as per my calcs. But I want to verify that there is no localized stress or deflection concern in that limited area of...

    vent pipe for underground house

boo1, Thanks for your specs., calcs and suggestions. Unfortunately I allready bought the 4" pipe. Maybe I can use a smaller fan to slow down the velocity of air coming thru the 4" pipe. Typically there will be no more than 2 people in house and 1 dog,so that may help some. Your analysis gives me...

    vent pipe for underground house

hydtools Thanks for that link. looks like the same principal, except I guess that is for big commercial use and it looks like must be in flat land where they must have sump pump. Luckily I dont need a pump as i am on side of the mountain so any condensate can just run out via gravity flow.

    vent pipe for underground house

hydtools If its 50 degrees and I want to bring it up to say 67 degrees I might just turn on the electric heat real low for awhile rather than crank up wood stove. If its 10 degrees or lower outside and it getting to say 40 degrees inisde I might stoke up the wood stove a burn a little wood. I...

    vent pipe for underground house

ornerynorsk and flash3780, The house is a simple rectangle with a single pitch shed type roof. It has windows all along the south side and 1 small window on the east and west side where the side fill allow enough room, so these little winodws are about 6 ft from the south wall. From there...

    vent pipe for underground house

This is sounding really bleak. The main article i read was about what they called an "umbrella house" it was dome shaped and had these passive heat exchange pipes as they called them. The inside temp of this umbrella house was very stable and no mold or mildew problems. You can Google it and...

    vent pipe for underground house

Ok It sounds like I will need some little fan to pull the air up thru the 4" pipe. So i must cut a hole in the very top of the front wall so the little fan can blow air out thru that hole in the wall. The house is about 23ft wide x 42 feet long and has 9 ft high wall in front and 8 ft high wall...

    vent pipe for underground house

I designed and am building an underground (dirt on the roof) house. The south wall is exposed like a walk out basement, the roof is covered with 18" of soil as well as the entire back wall. Most of the side walls are covered also. I installed a 4" PVC pipe under the floor slab. and it comes up to...

deep steel beam to shallow steel beam framing

Thanks AVak and nutte. Good points. This detail occurs over and over, not just once so I didnt want to just upsize the W8 arbitrarily, but could be the extra cutting out of the W12 to connect to the W8 would be more expensive than just using a W12 short beam as well. I think I may upsize the 5 ft...

deep steel beam to shallow steel beam framing

I have a 27 ft span. calcs. shows that a W12x14 should be ok.this W12 would frame into a W8x10 that only spans 5 ft. I am thinking about making the W8x10 a W 10x12 just so they dont have to cut out so much of the W12 to fit it to the W10. But I dont think its really necessary -just looks kinda...

    retaining wall - frost depth

CARLB Thanks for your input. Good points on the cold transfer through the wall face and the sytrofoam protection. I actually used the styrofoam for some shallow light pole spread footings where we couldnt go deeper because of other utilities. The poles have been up for several years and they...

    retaining wall - frost depth

JAE, Thanks for your response. I dont count of the first foot or so of soil for passive pressure. Because of some seasonal shrink and swelling of the soil. I dont usually count on it in front of the footing either. But, I'm not concerned about any passive resistance, i'm just wondering if frost...

    retaining wall - frost depth

Looking for opinions on soil cover for toe of reinforced concrete cantilever retaining wall. Some will put bottom of footing at local frost depth which is about 3 ft for my area. For wall say over 3' high, the heel of the footing has plenty of soil cover. For higher walls there of course is alot...
