Surface Roughness - Guidelines

Greetings, I deal with sealing against low pressure (<500psi) water using elastomeric seals, turned, milled and molded parts. I have found lots of literature detailing different ways of specifying surface finishes (Ra, Rp, Rz, Rv, Rt etc etc). However, I have found very little information...

    Config Mgmt & Assy Revisions/Numbers

Wait, I am confused. How is interchangeability restored at the assembly level of 9876-1? If you follow the steps outlined above, and up-rev 9876-1 from, say, RevA (includes 7890-1, no 2D barcode) to RevB (includes 7890-3, now with 2D barcode), now you may have inventory of 9876-1 RevB that...

O-Ring across a parting line - plastic molded part

Thanks for sharing your experience dgallup and the excellent post! What kind of instrumentation do you use to measure the 0.002" in QA?

O-Ring across a parting line - plastic molded part

What equipment would you use to measure a cut section? What equipment would you use to measure a parting lines size in a QA/production environment? (assuming your not going to cut up a sample from each production run?)

O-Ring across a parting line - plastic molded part

I was under the impression that higher pressures could exploit defects in the sealing surface that might not fail under lower pressures (while acknowledging that seals are most likely to fail at pressures under 100psi). Regardless, in the applications I have observed this questionable practice...

O-Ring across a parting line - plastic molded part

I have seen a number of plastic molded parts that feature a parting line crossing a radial o-ring groove and that are intended to seal against at least 100's of psi. Does anyone have any experience specifying plastic molded parts with features like these? How do you specify the size of the...

Ulta Low Viscosity Encapsulants for Electronics

So, after doing some googling, it appears that these Silicone Diluents are the same thing as Silicone Oils (they are both listed as polydimethylsiloxanes). I already have some 0.65cst Silicone Oil at work! I will try this first thing on monday.

Ulta Low Viscosity Encapsulants for Electronics

Silicone diluents... very interesting! This might be just the thing I need. Googling now, but can anyone recommend any vendors (Can/USA)?

Ulta Low Viscosity Encapsulants for Electronics

I have electronics that need to be potted with a very low durometer, water clear compound. It needs to be potted bubble free for aesthetic reasons, flow through and around some very fine features, and be a gel rather than a rubber to prevent de-lamination (separating with the wall of a clear...

What Mill (CNC or otherwise) would you buy for no more than $10k?

We've never had to make a part bigger than 3"x3"x1" before, however to be "future proof" something along the lines of 6"^3 should be adequate.

What Mill (CNC or otherwise) would you buy for no more than $10k?

The mill would be solely for prototyping designs, and we would get value out of CNC capability as it would allow us to prototype complex shapes. That is of course unless the premium that you pay for CNC makes it not worth it. Primarily would be machining plastics, however the ability to drill...
