That is not the case because of the longitudinal stresses due to bending which will also be present. According to ASME , Maximum longitudinal stresses can be 0.9SMYS which is 436.5 MPa. so that leaves (436.5-31.9) = 404.6 MPa for bending. Using 0.75 of this as some residual stresses...
Yes, the design temperature is higher than the installation temperature. So, longitudinal stresses due to thermal expansion are also there. And Tresca and Von Mises stresses are calculated as stated in the ASME code i.e,
Tresca = |SH − SL|
Von Mises = (SH^2+SL^2-SH.SL)^0.5
Thanks , prex for replying.
The hoop stress we have is 347.5 MPa. And SMYS is 485 MPa
As for the longitudinal stresses,
Stress due to internal pressure is 104.3 MPa,
Stress due to thermal expansion is -72.4 MPa
So considering the allowable limit of 0.9SMYS for longitudinal stress, we are...
Hi,
We have a pipeline calculation in which the Von Mises stress comes out to be 341.6 MPa while Tresca stress is only 12.2 MPa. Since both are failure criterion, is it alright to have that much difference between the two ? Von mises is supposed to be higher, but is it acceptable to have it...
Hi,
I have a doubt regarding the clause Clause 402.5.2 of ASME B 31.4 2009 edition . Directly quoting the clause,
" The stress range resulting from "thermal expansion" in pipe, fittings, and components in "unrestrained pipeline" is calculated as follows, using the modulus of elasticity at the...
Hi BigInch,
Thanks for the reply. But I am confused that in this situation, the bending will contribute to longitudinal stress and not the circumferential stress. Because in general design of pipeline as well , we consider stresses due to bending moment as a contributing factor in longitudinal...

Hi,
I am a newcomer to the pipeline engineering field and want to get a clarification regarding a doubt I had while calculating Maximum circumferential stress in highway crossings. Any help will be really appreciated.
According to API RP 1102, while we perform the Principal Stress check, while...
Hi,
Can someone please tell me if there is any difference between Vertical Submersible Pump and Vertical Submerged pump? Is it like Submersible pump has the whole assembly including the motor assembly submerged while it is different for submerged pump?
Also under what API types (VS1-VS7) are...
Thanks Montemayor and David. Yes, I graduated around 2 months back and am just trying to get an idea of this field. Will look froward to some valuable help on this forum.
