Hello all,
Background info: Retaining wall to be installed near a recently installed residential foundation. Being installed after the fact due to site grading changes. It is a cantilever style retaining wall, 4 feet exposed, and the base will be quite close to the foundation wall (4" away in...
FYI: The Canadian wood design manual states that hold-downs are not required if the following conditions are met:
1. Sum of factored basic shear resistance on both sides of the shear wall Vhd/Ls < 8.3 kN/m
2. Shear resistance of the wood based panel, vr, is based on nail diameter <=3.25mm and...
Hi all,
Does anyone have a good resource (and even better, Canadian?) for designing a shear wall without hold-downs at the end of wall segments?
i.e. if you are not providing concentrated anchorage against uplift at the ends of the wall, I believe you can design distributed anchorage instead...
Thank you for the replies.
I do see now how the wall is acting to counteract the eccentricity, thank you for pointing that out. Not 100% sure how to do a calculation to show this stiffness action, but I will think about it this morning and come up with some ideas.

Hello all,
I have some questions regarding an eccentric column load on a strip footing.
Background: Residential home constructed 5 yrs ago, main floor beams designed to be installed in beam pockets in the concrete foundation wall. At one beam location, beam pocket was not cut out of the...
