I would like to know, is there a huge difference between the two?

Any response will be greatly appreciated!

As I am a DesignStar user only, I am not that sure, but do have a perception about an answer to your question:

My feeling is that DesignStar always lags a bit behind CosmosWorks as the software is developed. E.g. CosmosWorks 2007 already offers things like cyclic symmetry, some beam element capability, etc. DesignStar is still at version 2006 with only one service pack released.

I guess we need a CosmosWorks user to confirm the above.

Really the difference is that DesignStar is meant to be used generically. Meaning CosmosWorks is intented to be used inside SolidWorks and is parametric while DesignStar can be used with any imported geometry from any cad package.

You are right about the different CAD associations (I thought that bit is spelled out quite clearly by the developers).

DesignStar is associative and allows parametric changes but only in the case of certain CAD programs (e.g. Solid Edge & Inventor).

But, my perception is that there are also other differences as mentioned in my post. Are you perhaps in a position to confirm that the capabilities I mentioned are indeed functional in CosmosWorks?

Hi,
up to v.2005 there was still a big difference btw the two, to summarize it roughly DesignStar was the inheritor of Cosmos/M non-linear while CW was the structural linear part of it put inside a totally different and new (integrated) interface.
But it was no mystery that the plans were to progressively put inside CW all the capabilities of DesignStar (Cosmos/M) and probably GeoStar (whose interface, not very dissimilar to the old Femap if I remember well, has been starved to death back in 2002 or so...). In fact, as far as I know from undirect sources (I don't use Cosmos any more), the latest version of CW has material & geometrical non-linear capabilities, as well as extended contact capabilities, cyclic-symmetry handling, and the possibility to handle mixed models (beams + shells or solids).
Hope this helps...

Regards

DesignStar I believe now runs off the Solidworks core...or whats called Solidworks OEM. Basically Solidworks license the part, assembly, and/or drawing modules to partners to run as standalone programs. The partner can then turn on/off different functions or change icons, etc. Its exactly like having Solidworks (minus some features) and an add-in except you don't buy Solidworks, you buy the partners bundle.

Cam/Works offers such a bundle that includes their CAM products plus Solidworks part/assy modeling (no drawings). So its cheaper than buying a full Solidworks seat and CAM/works.

Here's a review....looks just like Solidworks:
