For a solar powered application we have had success using a 1/4hp 24v dc 1800rpm motor to drive a swamp cooler that normily requires a 1/2 hp ac motor, (although the pully ratio was slightly increased). Now we have upgraded to new sinewave invertor would like to consider an A/C motor replacement. However anyway I cut it I just can not beat the DC motor w ~80%efficiency. Is this basically the best I can do? or is there new type VFD/ repultion type motor kits available that will beat it? Thank You.

It is possible to get better efficiency with an AC motor. Not sure about the system efficiency considering the inverter and potential drive. Should be able to find a DC input AC output drive out there somewhere, eliminating the DC to AC inverter before the drive.
