100 kw gen set no voltage 1

when i apply 12v d/c to exiter field . the generator is set up for series delta 240v and 120v to neutral/ after applying 12v to field all i get on a/c output phase to phase is 6v , not my tycipal field, any kind of tests i could do ? Thanks in advance for any help , mike nellany
 

After "flashing" the DC {often rotating} field, the AC output should increase, to in turn, power the exciter. Sounds like that's not happening--exciter problem...open AC fuse?

based on your statement above.. you are working with "brush-type ac generator" where the field exciter terminals are connected to the two brushes riding on the two slip rings of the rotor field-winding, if this is the case.. measure or test the terminal dc voltage on the brushes, make sure you really have the 12v supply.. if you really supplied it correctly you had a problem on the rotor field-winding, test the winding for possible shorts, open winding, grounds, etc provided that the rated field excitation in your generator is 12v otherwise the unit set no voltage or undervoltage could be set. in addition to, could you give me the number of "leads out" of your generator, the nameplate rating, directly or indirectly coupled?, the brand name or the manufacturer.
if your unit is brushless type where it has a rotary exciter, it would then a different case.

Question: Do you follow any manual or are you just experimenting with it?

It is always best to totally exhaust the manual on the device, then tech support, prior to re-inventing the troubleshooting wheel. The Internet is a rich supply for outdated manuals, FAQs, postings, and even chat sites for various brands. Further, the device's own company tech support is an amazingly underused resource.

Have the above been sought without success?
 
Hi Genman.

You applied 12 v to the field,however;you still have no output from the Gen Set.
Did you verify a current/load on the field.You should measure a few amps.If you have a value of current from the field than you know your field is OK.You have to make sure that you do have the 6/9/12 Alt leads hooked for a Delta or Star,whatever the connection suppose to be.If they are OK your Alternator should collaborate and give you an output.
I used to put some of those things together,long time ago.Small sizes (25 /30 KVa) and from time to time, we also didn't get the desired outputs.Jokingly you use to say "hit it with a hammer".I don't remember if I ever hit it with a hammer,what I do rememberis touching 2 Phase leads toghether and presto,we got output.
Probably sounds like the proverbial"old wives tale" in this case old men's tale.It may very well defy logic,so many things do.
Caution: 1st-I would make sure you have a powered field.Measurable load (amps)
2nd -verify connections are made on your alternator.Delta/ Star or whatever you need.

3rd-Make sure you only show less than 6 volts on your output phase to phase.

Ok, its your generator.Go for it.
