1043 Shrinking in Heat Treat???

I am highly skeptical that this is really happening but quality says they have data to support part shrinkage. Has anyone ever ran into something like this before? We have 1043 hot rolled steel, .587" diameter and 5.5" long. We induction heat treat 1.375" on both ends to 48-52 Rc, the middle stays soft. I am being told that the parts are shrinking from .002" to .006" in OAL. I personally think that we are burning off a burr, but until we are able to run these parts again in a couple of weeks and I can see this myself, I am hoping that someone may be able to give me some feed back.

It is absolutely correct that materials will shrink when heat treated. The molecular structure is being densified and re-arranged in the process.
