11 kV Ex 'e' certified junction box having exposed connectioninisde the enclosure 1

Is it mandatory to provide boot for 6.6kV (HV) terminals to certify the enclosure as Ex ‘e’?

Or

the junction box containing bare (exposed) live terminals inside the junction box can be certified for use as Ex ’e’ enclosure?

My concern is some static discharge during the switching of connected long length cable (about say 4 kms).

Can anyone share the experience or give some literatures on this?

Are you a manufacturer of such a box, or are you an end user?

Are you working to IECEx regulations or some other system?

If you are working to IECEx regulations, and you are a manufacturer, then you really need to review 60079.7 which specifies requriements for Ex e certification.

Even if you are an end user, I would review 60079.7 for information. I would have had a look at it myself for you but I do not have my copy handy.

That being said, there are certified Ex e terminals for high voltages out there which do not specify a boot or similar. However most I have seen include significant barriers/shrouds around the terminal. Remember the terminal itself needs to have certification, in addition to the Ex e box. As long as you comply with the requirements of those two certifications then your installation meets Ex e.

But also refer 60079.7 for reference.

Many thanks for your feedback. If you can tell me which section, it would be helpful. Nevertheless, I will refer IEC 60079.7. I will also share my own interpretations/understanding of this standard.

Just for information, I am an end user. For the offshore application.

Someone said to me that IEC 60079 is for the low voltage. For high voltage it may not be fully applicable. Would you throw some light on this as well?

Hi Krisys,

It is not correct that IEC 60079 series of standards apply only to low voltage equipment.

See excerpt from IEC 60079-7 below.

This is just a snippet, there is probably more in that standard that applies to your application.
