12V Hydrostatic Pump

I have been given the task to source a 12V hydraulic pump that will generate 5GPM flow and be able to withstand the ruggedness of off road racing.

I dont deal with pumps so I figured I would come here and ask on some recomendations for quality pump brands as well as a place I might go to find said pump.

This is for a rear steer off road vehicle application. All the information I can find is based on front steer hydraulic units running off of an engine driven pump.

Hi kritter,

The one performance item missing is the max. pressure required of the 5GPM pump output. Without that, it is difficult to come up with a HP rating which will lead to sizing the 12v motor/pump setup.

One good thing about hydraulics is that you can separate the pump and rear steer valve/actuator with hard piped and/or flexible lines. So, you could still drive the pump with the engine.
 
Contact the guys who do the hydraulic suspension - low riders and 'car dancers' - most of them have sources. Otherwise I'd start with Parker Hyd and Greenlee who do the hyd pumps/motors for industry

CCW...I havent gotten a straight answer on pressure. I took an educated guess at 1000-1500 psi. I found a pump from Haldex but at 1500psi it doesnt supply enough flow. They specialize in hydrostatic pumps and control valves but mostly 24 volts and up. The car cannot be plumbed off the motor as it would require an pump or serious pump and reservoir modifications, more bracketry, and more TIME which is something we dont have right now.


Sprint Car...I contacted reds hydraulics who is the leader in the hopping car industry and they make their own pumps but were not only clueless to what a pump curve is, they didnt have much faith in their pumps working at 12 volts since the systems most often run in those cars are 24 volts up to 96 volts. I asked for flow rates, current consumption etc...and all they new was 24 volts equalled 2500psi and 96 volts equalled 12 ksi.


Thanks for the help, hopefully I can get a straight answer on what psi is needed from the Ram company.

This works out to about 3 HP peak at 1000 psi peak for 5 gpm. A continuous rated motor at 2HP might be about right. One big problem is high current draw at 12 VDC. This is really going to dim the lights. You will need a big alternator to keep up. You can begin to see why the hopping car guys use 24-96 volts.

While you are looking, punch in "electric power steering" in the google search engine. Honda and others needed power steering when the engine was not running on their hybrids so they offered all electric power steering.
This may be a little more efficient than the 12VDC/hyd.pump/steering system you are contemplating.

Although electric steering would be the way to go a la Delphi on the GM rear steer. Time is not on my side to design/educate myself on an electric steer.
