I am working on an application that requires around 1/2 hp to act on a speed reducer which will output the torque we need to lift a heavy load slowly. We are considering using a hydraulic set up but it would be more compact and hopefully cheaper using a small electric motor. The only complicating factors are that the motor must be powered by a 12 volt battery and we would like to be able to reverse the direction to lower the load when needed. If anyone could tell me if such a product exists and where to search for it or if there are other efficient options to accomplish this goal I would be most appreciative.

Thanks,
Mike

Does the Speed reducer contain a Braking system ?? You said "Lifting" a heavy load. So You need to maintain control of the load I assume..
There are such motors available if there not cost preventive...

Hope This Helps..

Matt,

The speed reducer itself does not contain a braking system but one is required.

Would this be a special motor or could a permanent magnet motor, for instance, be wired to be reversible?

Thanks,
Mike

Changing the direction of a DC motor is done simply by reversing the motor leads to the battery. Search McMasters for "DC Motor."

sreid,

That is what I thought but I figured I should ask a simple question on here rather than at work.

Thank you,
Mike

Check the KB Drives website. They offer 4quad drives will allow for holding Tq. Also avail are units with inputs for reversing.

Sorry for delay,, But looks like you got a better answer than I could have givin anyway,,,,,Good Luck !!
