1541H induction hardend axles 1

Dear All

greetings for the day.

For much time 1541 H induction hardened axle shafts should be tempered and at what temperature...

Axles are of 47 mm Dia, quench hardness is 62 Hrc...

A furnace temper of 150 degrees C for 2 hours would be typical.
 
What final hardness do you need? Depending on the range the 1541H tempering temperature may need to approach 200C.
 
Yes between 150 and 200 should cover most products.
 
Sir we required hardness between 50 to 55 hrc .....
 
I would start with a 150C temper as noted by CoryPad and check results. If the hardness is still above 55 HRC then raise the temperature 25C. You should not have to go above 225C to get within your final range.
 
thanks dbooker..we will be in the permissible limits as advised by u....one thing more with in how much time we should temper 1541H axle shafts once it done with induction hardening... we can have put alot of 100 pcs per tempering furnace....
 
In his previous reply CoryPad called out 2 hours which is sufficient. Parts should be tempered within two hours of hardening.

sir after doing tempering of 1541H axle shafts at 225 Deg c for two hours still the surface hardness is hovering around 56 and 57 hrc. where we required surface hardenss between 50 - 55 hrc... required u expert advice on it.... should we give another shot for two hrs at 200 degree c..... for getting the desired surface hardness of 50 - 55 hrc....please advice..
 
It looks like you need to increase the temperature. More time at the lower temperature will not work.
 
we have increased the temp upto 270 deg c soaked for an hour, still the surface hardenss hovers around 55 - 56 hrc..but after putting grinder on surface the hardness is 53 - 54 hrc.... is this due to scaling as we re tempering the axle shafts that its is showing the surface hardenss at 56 hrc..please advice....
 
One possibility could be prior heat treatment. Were the shafts subjected to a pretreatment furnace process prior to induction hardening? If so, the carbon potential of the neutral hardening furnace could be too high, and would be reflected in your surface hardness results. The temper scale should not increase your readings.

Another possibility is the chemistry. You should have a sample checked for conformance to 1541H, particularly the carbon content. If it is well above 0.45 that could also influence the hardness results.
