Hi forum,

I have been given a wheel that has hooked teeth on the periphery that is used to cut up recycled plastic. I have to replicate the part, including if possible the material.

Using emmision spectroscopy the testing lab thinks it appears to be similar to 1552 steel. the constituents are
C .58%
Mn 1.32%
P .027%
S .03%
Si 0.15%
Cu .45%
Ni .06%
Cr .06%
Mn .01%
Al .05%

Is there a readily availble (USA) material that I could substitute. The 1552 has been carburised and quenched too 59Rc, and I would do a similar process.

The properties I need are abrasion resistance and toughness.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Thanks metengr,

Is 4320 used in similar applications now?

I'm going to the heat treaters monday morning to get some input using the 4320 in respect to the heat treating process

Similar application? I can't provide any comment because I do not deal with machinery that shreds plastic. You asked for a comparable or better alternative, and 4320 should suffice.
4320 is an alloy steel which demonstrates excellent hardenability, can be easily carburized and contains nickel for toughness. The case hardness that can be achieved with 4320 will match the original material, the difference will be notch toughness improvement.
