I am rebuilding a 68 mustang with a 302 350hp engine. I am having the C4 transmission rebuild and was asked if I wanted to add a second stage to it. I agreed since the cost was relatively low but still do not understand the real detail of what it is. Can someone explain what the real benefit will be to me?

Never heard of a "second stage"; do you mean a "Stage 2" shift kit? It is likely to make shifts harsher but more positive.

I don't know what the weak areas of the C4 are, but it might also involve upgraded friction pads/plates. Some transmissions can fit an extra clutch disc for more holding power. Some serious upgrades also include stronger sprag clutches and/or clutch baskets. A common GM upgrade is a different servo valve that increases clutch pressure which reduces slippage.

Thanks, yes it is a stage 2 that I was inferring to.

The particulars of a "stage 2" upgrade will vary from shop to shop. Make sure you know what you are paying for.
