We have a machine in our manufacturing facility that we are going to be rebuilding.
The machine is currently controlled by hydraulic cylinder to move the part in the y axis and air cylinders maintaining contact with a tracer in the z axis.
We are also stepping in increments in the z axis. We have that numbers of cycles that are programmable and the increment is also programmable.

I would like to set the machine up with a 2 axis controller running with ball screws to control the Y and Z axis.

I would also like to be able to program the profile to be followed on a computer.

I apoligize I did not finish my thread.

I explained what we are wanting to do.

The problem is that our company generally does not want to spend money for integrators which means we have to develop these systems ourselves.

Where should we start?

Start by evaluating your system:

What are the forces that are needed to move the x-z table?
I assume the hydraulic cyl. was used due to a high force requirement.

What are the velocities and accelerations required?

This should then give you an idea of the inertia of your load?
If using servo motors then you need to calculate the inertia as seen by the motor.

Also, what type of positional accuracy do you need in each axis?

After evaluating the system, then and only then can you evaluate the best method of control(servo motor, hydraulic, etc.)
