2 heat 2 cool

Can anyone please explain to me what a 2 heat 2 cool is? Also the other variations like 1 heat 1 cool (Thats is just one constant setting for heating right?) and 3 heat 3 cool ect.

"The Smart Si thermostat is designed to operate with low-voltage heating and cooling systems. It is not designed for use with line-voltage or millivolt heating and cooling systems. The Smart Si thermostat supports:
Up to 2 heat and 2 cool stages on a conventional system.
Up to 3 heat and 2 cool stages on a heat pump system.

As IRstuff stated, the "X" Heat, "X" Cool is either:

A. How many stages of heating and cooling a piece of equipment has, or
B. How many stages of heating and cooling a thermostat controller can control.

Many of us here old timers don't have a clue of what you just wrote, Never heard of 2heat2cool business in 30 years.
