Hi,

I have noticed that a number of companies will utilize SCH 80 minimum wall thickness for 2" piping regardless of what the minimum wall thickness indicates per the calculations, even for 150# or 300# systems.

I understand that threaded piping would potentially require SCH 80, but this is being done for butt weld piping too.

Anyone have thoughts on this practice? Is it somehow related to CFR 192 code?

Thanks

Mecnanical strength.

Savings of metal are low and you don't have to worry about having the wrong size.

2" pipe is often stupid on or used as handholds so sch 80 is a good idea

No code issue AFAIK

On top of LittleInch's all very good points, small diameter pipes that are very thin tend to get damaged during transportation very easily due to poor handling. Sometimes it is easier to bump up the thickness, at a negligible cost increase, just for peace of mind.
