I was looking through the 2009 IBC Commentary and stumbled upon a provision that I had to read a few times to interpret and wanted to bring it up with you good folks to ask for your interpretation as well. When looking at page 7-39 of the 2009 IBC commentary (attached), the note in Section 706.5.1 states:
“This section (706.5.1) deals only with fire walls that terminate at an exterior wall that does not continue in the same horizontal plane, but the exterior walls on each side of the fire wall form an angle less than 180 degrees.”
We interpreted this note to indicate that when a fire wall intersects an exterior wall that runs straight past the end of the fire wall on both sides (at 180 degrees), then the 1 hr UL rated wall, 4ft on both sides of fire wall rule in Section 706.5.1.1 need not apply. I’ve attached a sketch to illustrate the cases believed best represents all fire wall to exterior wall intersection configurations. Does my interpretation that the 4 hr rating of exterior wall NOT being required on both sides of fire wall pass muster when applied to an exterior wall being continued past a fire wall at 180 degrees?
