This is not a huge problem, but it has been annoying me for 2 weeks now since installing 2012. Whenever I click on the "open file" icon the default file type is assembly. 9 out of 10 times I am trying to open a part file not an assembly, which requires me to change the drop down to all files. Does anyone know how/ where to change the default file type setting for this?

Thank you!

To clarify my previous post, whatever filter was used in the Files of type: field, will be the default for the next File > Open window.

CBL
"Mine defaults to whatever type was last opened."

Does this work for 2010?

AFAIK, it has worked that way for many (all ?) versions. I'm onto SW12 now so cannot check.

I am running Windows 7 (64bit). I have been running Solidworks since 2005 and like most of you, the type of file type is usually what was opened last, but this has changed on my 2012 version to always defaulting to assembly.

I tried the registry fix, no luck there either. I changed the setting to "0" for all files but everything still defaults to Assembly.

Setting this key to a value of 1 will cause the filter to default to "All Solidworks Files" in the File->Open dialog.

Setting it to 2 will cause it to default to filter parts.

Setting it to 3 will cause it to default to filter assemblies.

The 0 setting is usually used to disable the function.
