2205 flux core welding 1

I have some tank work dealing with 2205 alloy. One of my bidders has proposed a flux core wire welding process.

I am not familiar with flux core in a duplex stainless application. Is this inferior wire feed using a shielding gas? What are the trade-offs if any?

Any input would be appreciated.

Get your hands on the following,
"Practical Guidelines for the Fabrication of Duplex Stainless Steels" by International Molybdenum Association.

I believe I obtained a free copy from the Nickel Development Institute. This is a very good reference document regarding duplex ss.
 
A few years ago I worked on a project with a fairly large (25' dia x 200' high) vessel (max thickness 1-1/2") that was done almost exclusively with flux core.

The project went very well. As with any welding make sure there are good procedures and that they are being followed.

I strongly second getting "Practical Guidelines for the Fabrication of Duplex Stainless Steels".
 
The only issue I've ever had with using the FCAW process on Duplex stainless steels is the fact that it has lower toughness than the other, conventional processes. If impacts in the mid 20's are suitable for your application I'd say it should be fine, but, if you have to have impact values higher than that, I'd suggest you look at pulse mig.
