Hello everyone,

I'm going to turn a 3D problem into a 2D for further analysis in Abaqus. The original 3D part has been made in Solidworks and I can see the cross-section via cut tool. I intend to import the exact same cross section into Abaqus and tried different ways, non of which seemed to be working well. The exported dxf from the cross section sketch made in Solidworks, couldn't be opened in Abaqus. I also tried sketching the cross-section on a parallel plane, then extruding that with the smallest possible thickness (0.0001) in hopes of introducing this to Abaqus as a 2D part, however, this very thin section is still known as 3D by Abaqus. Is it possible to produce a 2D part file from solidworks out of the 2D sketch and import it in Abaqus? I know vice versa works!

Thanks for suggestions!

In Abaqus it is required to have the cross section for the 2D analysis at the xy-plane at z=0. Check that the part in Solidworks has the correct orientation and then try this:

- Bring the 3D Part to Abaqus/CAE
- Create a datum plane at z=0 (so a xy plane)
- Create a cell partition with that datum plane => now you have a geometric face at z=0
- Select Tools -> Geometry Edit -> Face -> Remove to delete all faces except this one at z=0 => you should see the cross section only now
- Right-click in the tree at the part container and edit the modeling space from 3d to 2D Planar
