Hi everyone, I have been struggling for weeks to realise the turning of material and the problem is that the material penetrates the workpiece from the inside. It would be very helpful if anyone could provide some suggestions to solve my problems. Thank you very much.

Add surface erosion to general contact definition:

*Surface, type=element, name=surfall
,
elerode, interior
...
*Contact inclusions
surfall,
...
*Contact controls assignment, nodal erosion=yes

where: elerode - set with all solid elements in the model that use material failure, surfall - all exterior faces in the model and all interior faces of elerode

Hi FEA way,

Thank you for your reply but forgive me that I couldnt understand your answer completely as I am quite new to ABAQUS.

As far as I understood, you want me to use General contact AND Self contact.

Here are your instructions that I understood:

1. Create a set named 'elerode', where it includes all solid elements in the model that use material failure, which is the upper layer of my workpiece.

2. Create a surface named 'surfall',(type element) where it includes all exterior faces in the model and all interior faces of elerode

3. Create 'Self contact' and select 'surfall' as the surface

4. In the 'Self contact', assign Contact Control.

My Questions:

1. for 'surfall', I could only select all exterior faces of my workpiece/tool,and I could only select type GEOMETRY/MESH, What do you mean by selecting 'all interior faces of elecrode'?

2. I dont understand about '*Contact controls assignment, nodal erosion=yes'

Sorry for your inconvenience and I would be very grateful if you could provide a more detailed response. Thank you very much.

That’s something different than self-contact. Surface erosion allows you to include internal element faces (those that became exposed due to element deletion) in contact.

The changes have to be done directly to the input file (you can use Keyword Editor for that). You just have to create a set named elerode and add the aforementioned keyword lines to the input file (in the same place as your contact definition).

Thank you for your explanation and I have tried following your steps but there is an error.

So I managed to sub in the Contact part but not the Surface part as the keyword editor doesnt allow 'surface' to be added on.

Its the same whether I sub both parts together or one by one.

May I ask what is the solution for this problem? Will it work if I write the input file from outside source and sub it into ABAQUS as a whole? Thank you very much.

Apparently, Keyword Editor can’t be used in this case. So you have to save the input file and edit it manually in Notepad or other software like that. Then run the analysis from this file via command line (without Abaqus/CAE).

These three dots after elerode, interior and after surfall are not necessary. I added them just to show that these lines of code are separated with some additional keywords.

Is the elerode set defined in the input file ?

Hi FEA way,

So the three dots caused the errors and after i removed and ran the analysis, it all went good. Internal elements are having contact with each other. Thank you very much for your guidance!!!
