Hi, all:

Just wondering if anyone can help me out.

I need to rewind a 3 phase PM AC motor to 2 phase motor. It has permanent magnet on the rotor. There are 12 slots and 8 poles in stator winding.

Is it possible to build a balance 2 phase winding in this case? If not, how can I build a more balanced 2 phase winding?

All suggestions are welcome.

Many thanks

Would it be easier to buy or make a Scott transformer and leave the motor alone?

Thanks, ScottyUK, but it needs to rewind to a two phase motor so that we can test a new idea.

I thought to use Phase A as D winding and phase B and C in series to form Q winding. However, there might be 3rd harmonic in phase A, which is not desired.

I am still thinking.

A motor rewind shop could give you a better answer to your question. However, I do not see how a 12 slot stator can be wound for 8 poles 3-phase.

How many permanent magnet poles are there on the rotor?

Hi, mc5w:

It can be done with 12 slots for 8 pole 3 phase( there are also 8 poles in the rotor). Fractional slot has to be used, i.e., one slot contains conductors from different windings (e.g. phase A and phase B).

It is the winder who told me it is impossible to get a balanced 2 phase winding.
