HeY Guys,

I'm spanning an opening 3' wide that only has 1.5" depth allowed for members. Using CFS, how would you guys go about this? They don't make 1.5" studs to my knowledge, so wanted to get some ideas what would you guys use in this situation? I need to be able to fasten sheathing from above and below also.

Thank you1

- In case of using CFS , your approach ; to fasten sheathing from above and below is reasonable,

- But i would consider orthotropic deck (steel plate stiffened either longitudinally with steel ribs or transversely..

I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure..It is: Try to please everybody.

Spanning it for what level of load? Self weight of some stuff above? maybe something works, supporting 10 feet of floor, absolutely not.

Maybe use some unistrut?? Fairly heavy as far as readily-available light gage material, and generally 1 5/8" deep (not 1.5" but close..)

Again it will obviously depend on what you are carrying, but this may be your best bet at a "structural" member that is around 1 1/2" and is not red iron.

How about 1 1/2" flanged track nested over 1 3/8" flanged stud? (xxxT150-xx over xxxS137-xx)

How about just 1.5" Metal Deck? Really depends on what you need in terms of loading, and construction.

1.5" verco deck can take quite a bit of load at 3' span.

If the 1 5/8" strut is too big, there is a competitive product by Kindorf that is 1.5".

I haven't used it in practice in the US, but in Asia CFS rectangular tubes were easily available in that size range. You might be looking at a metal fabrication supplier rather than a traditional structural steel supplier. Could still drive self tapping screws through it up to 1.5mm wall thickness.
