304 Stainless Rod

Got a cut sheet for A304 stainless rod. The It has ".2YS" and UTS. I am taking UTS as ultimate tensile strength, but what is the .2YS? Im taking it as my yield strenght, but why the .2YS?

The .2YS probably means the Yield Strength at a .2% strain offset, a fairly common set point for yield strength in these kinds of steel. But, verify this with your steel supplier. The yield strength should be about 40% of the ult. str.
 
Yes, it is sloppy shorthand for 0.2% offset. While that is std in the US overseas you often see 0.4% or 0.5% reported also.
If this is straight 304 (not "L") and it is annealed the minimum properties should be 30ksi/75ksi.
(I'll add that up to 45/90 are actually fairly common in annealed 304)
There are specs for cold finished rod that are stronger than that.

.2YS is 73.85ksi, UTS is 97.20





 
0.2ys = 73.8ksi seems to be a tad high...

So strange to see the singularity approaching while the entire planet is rapidly turning into a hellscape. -John Coates

73.8 ksi is not unreasonable considering the ultimate is 97.20 ksi. Here is a snip from AISC DG 27. I highlighted the portions of interest. Maybe the material is dual certified and that is why is is so much higher then the minimum for 304 or you got 304 duplex.

Stainless steels don’t tend to have a clearly defined elastic limit. In practice 0.2% strain is often taken as the yield point.
 
You can get Grade 500 (MPa) 304 reinforcing bar. The rod in question may be made by a similar process, so the specified 0.2% stress isn't out of the question. Sometime the non-magnetic properties are important so not dual certified with magnetic grades.
 
This is cold worked material, so the strength will be above typical.
There should also be a specified minimum tensile elongation.
It will be somewhat magnetic.
There are references to property very similar to your numbers.
304/304L/304N Relatively severe cold work 25.4mm – 31.75mm 690 Mpa min 545 Mpa min 24% min
