Does ANSI B16.9 explicitly state geometry of 3D bends, ie. shall nominal or outer diameter apply to the bending radius? Or must this be specified by the buyer? I would be happy if a possible explicit statement of this could be referred to.

Hello,

Regarding elbow fittings, ANSI/ASME Standard B16.9 specifies ONLY welding elbows of 1.0 r and 1.5 r. The bend radius is based upon nominal pipe size, not actual pipe OD. I am not aware of any ANSI standard for other types of multiple radius pipe bends.

regards, John.

Espen,

3D bends are governed by the rules contained in ASME B31.1/31.3.

There is also an old recommended industry guideline by The Piping Fabrication Institure (PFI) that governs all types of bends for many thickness of piping

See:
ANSI B16.9 does not apply to 3D bends
