3D object color changing on its own

I have a 3D solid object (wire duct from Panduit) imported into AutoCAD 2015. I imported the .STP file from the manufacturer via the IMPORT command. I had to EXPLODE the object at least once (maybe twice) in order to be able to slice it for length and alter its color. The object's color is set to ByLayer, and the layer's color is set to 254 (one of the standard gray colors). Every time I close and then re-open the file, it has changed color; it appears "white" in model space, and "black" in paperspace. When I select the object, it still shows that its color is ByLayer, and that color is correct, but renders incorrectly. Changing the color to any other color, and then back to ByLayer fixes the problem until the nect save-->close-->reopen cycle. I've checked every layer and object property I can think of, and all appear correct. Nothing seems to allow the color selection to "stick." I've run AUDIT and RECOVER on the file, and found no errors.

Thoughts?

I am a little rusty on the subject. You will have to investigate your current settings of VISUALSTYLES and go from there.
I remember trying to use this... back in 2007 or so... a very difficult thing to do.
I also remember settings that would cause exactly the problem you have.
Something to do with the colour of the background, IIRC.

Attractive or accurate colour rendering is NOT something you should be doing in AutoCAD.
