Hi Folks,

This is probably an easy one but can someone summarize the advantage of and how to set the 3GB switch in WinXP Pro or at leat point me to an FAQ that is SW centric?

I've searched the forum but only found bits and pieces here and there and these don't necessarily cover the topic in enough detail for me to be conversant on the subject.

Thanks,

There are oodles of general sites, articles, blogs & documents on google if you use /3gb switch as the search words.

1) Crashes stop.
2) You are able to open larger files.
3) Watch the Kernel Memory usage in the Task Manager.

Benefits will only really be realised when working with very large files.

We have 2GB of RAM on our computers that use SolidWorks heavily. Before using the 3GB switch, we would crash everytime when SolidWorks reached roughly 1.3GB of memory useage. After the switch was enabled, we were able to use our full 2GB of RAM and the crashing at 1.3GB stopped copmletely. Pretty much the same reasons CBL just gave.

Or you can just move up the 64-bit systems.. the only advantage of 64-bit systems is that you don't have a memory limitation like you do with 32-bit XP.

64-bit systems will improve your speed like most people think it will. Other then just it being a memory issue.
