hi All,

we are thinking to use 3LHDPE for a buried pipeline without concrete coating, do you have any experience in such application? do you think that 3LHDPE is better than 3LPP? where i can find more informations on that subject?

temperature is ok both for 3LPP and 3LHDPE

thanks
Bye bye

If the pipeline temperature is amenable to both types of coating, the key drivers in the decision will be:

1. Cost difference
2. Expectations of damage - the PP has a higher damage resistance
3. Preference for field joint coating type and whether it can be qualified for application to PP.

Steve - you say that PP has higher damage resistance than HDPE - - Within the UK there is an opinion that HDPE is much superior to PP for wear resistance - We never seen evidence of this but go along with the belief and usually recommend HDPE for jobs in a local Mining Company where the treatment plant handles abrasive mineral slurry.
Most certainly HDPE is easier to cut, saw,and drill, The price is approx the same as PP, and the lower grades of HDPE can also be welded just like PP
Tomorrow we will set up some tests to try and check out the true facts but meanwhile, I would appreciate any guidance if anyone has experience. (Tomorrow we must recommend the best choice for an undersea slurry line)

The issue in my point 2 is that of external pipe handling damage. PP coating is certainly more tolerant of pipe handling and storage operations than PE coating, especially in high temperature locations (this won't bother you in the UK!!!). As to abrasive wear resistance in internal environments, I have no experience. Your application implies the use of polymeric pipe rather than coatings on steel pipe which are, most probably, not comparable.

Thanks for your reply - I much appreciate speed of response - - This is such a usefull forum. I'll post the results of our slurry wear tests in a couple of months.
