I have a hollow 4-foot steel bar (inside diameter .824"), which I'll be carrying on long nature hikes. I like science thought experiments, and got to wondering what could be tested or done by wrapping the bar with fine wire? Direction sensing? Battery charging?

To what end? If it's bare wire, it's shorted to tbe steel bar, so there's nothing of use electrically.

I remember wrapping something in (copper?) wire a couple of times when I was a kid . . . maybe that was to make a radio frequency controller, or static energy collector....I don't know....tx for info that it's definitely not magnet related. ~j

most likely magnet wire - it has enamel insulation but if the color of the enamel is clear, it looks like bare copper wire.

Your original question is too vague for me.

lionx,

If you are hiking near high power lines, and you wrapped the bar with insulated wire, then you could create a transformer. I had a friend once who had a cabin in a remote location. He did the exact same thing. What he wasn't counting on, was how closely the power companies monitor line losses. They sent someone out and found his rig. This is called theft of service.
