4-ply 2x_ built up beam/column nailing pattern

Hi, I have a project have 4 ply 2x10 built-up beams/columns. Instead of full length nails penetration in the 4 ply from opposite sides, any chance we can nail 2 ply first and another 1 ply each face with 3" nail to make it 4 ply built up beam/column? Which part of design code I can find relevant information and details. Either in the Canadian or American Wood code.
