I am looking for a Carbon steel plate that is rated to -40 degree. I did come across BS-4360 that has a material 40DD which is rated to -30 degree. Can you recommend a carbon steel that is similar to this but rated to -40 degree C. Can you recommend a british standard as above or an american standard or a standard commonly used in the oil industry.

Mechotron.

Mechotron, not familiar with BS-4360, but ASME SA-516-70 or perhaps -60 is often used at these temperatures. Per ASME Sec VIII, Div. 1 impact testing may be required depending on thickness.

Mike

BS4360 40DD was a structural steel. The nearest comparable structural steel would be BS EN 10025-3 S275NL with impact values down to -50°C.
If you look for pressure vessel steel than SJones already gave the right references.
You can also take API 2H Grade 42.
S275NL and API 2H 42 are hardly available on stock, but the the higher yield strength class 355 MPa (50 ksi) is available:
BS EN 10025-3 S355NL
API 2H Grade 50

You might try looking at ASTM A131 grade EH or FH. These are the same as ABS grades.
