Jul 22, 2005 #2 swall Materials Sep 30, 2003 2,764 Any 4140 bar over 1" diameter will not fully harden with an oil quench. Although water quench could be used for 1" dia. and smaller bars, there is likely to be more distortion than with an oil quench. Upvote 0 Downvote
