What's the difference between "4140 quench & temper" and "4140 heat treat & stress relieved"? I thought the terms were interchangable but my suppliers seem confused.

4140 heat treat and temper though not a scientific term might mean normalize and temper. The other term refers to a faster rate of cooling in oil or water or polymerfollowed by a tempering cycle.

Yes. Heat treat is a common term used for annealing.normalising, tempering solutionizing, etc. What process is exactly followed has to be specified.

Go to and search for 4140 steel. 32 results. Note the wide range of tempering temperatures. A lower tempering T will give greater strength but less ductility (elongation at break). Click on any listing to see the properties and specifications (ASTM, BS (UK), DIN, JIS, SAE AMS, etc.).
