Dear all,

I'm looking to find some 430FR steels in plate (dimension mini 450 x 450 x 70mm) for testing it in magnetic applications. However, this alloys seems to be only available in bars (by example carpenter is producing it in bars).

My question is: is it possible to buy bars and to have it made in the form of plates in the required dimensions.

Scientific alloys affored me to do so, but in smaller dimensions. Do you think it will affect the properties (especially the magnetic properties and the electrical resistance).

Does someone have a solution for me? Thank you for your help...

430FR is especially fomulated for free cutting machining. 430 is better for magnetic applications.

If you look at datas, (for example and you will find that the hysteritic cycle of 430FR is far better than the one for the 430. That mean less iron loss in our application.

Moreover, 430FR has an higher electrical resistance, minimizing eddy current and then again iron losses.

That would be the perfect material for our application if it would be available in blocks of about 500 x 500 x 100... But it seems that it is only available in bars. The only way to get this product in blocks (that found) is to order for a special command and to buy the whole 20 Tonnes... Which is impossible for us who need to first test the solution and validate it...

If someone has a solution for me, do not hesitate.

I'm looking for a bulk material with very tight hysteritic cycle, high magnetic saturation (1.6T min), High resistance and if possible resistant to corrosion. Exactly the definition of 430FR in fact, except for availability...

You can't compare to generic 430. The carbon range on 430 is so broad that you make the alloy as a ferritic (low C) or as a martensitic (high C). They are completely different alloys. You need to look at the C and the heat treatment. It isn't the FR that gives the different properties.

Thank you for your help, I know I had mistaken somewhere... Do you know where I can find 430 ferritic material (low C) with guaranted magnetic properties?

The last time that I saw any was from AK. They don't guarantee magnetic properties, but if you hit the C level and then anneal properly you will be fine.

Thank you for your help. I've checked on their database, it seems that in the fully annealed state, the properties are exactly what I'm looking for.

I have sent a quotation request, hoing that they will be able to provide me this grade in the right dimension (mini 500 x 500 x 100 mm).

Thank you for your kind help, which was very helpful to me.

I had an answer from carpenter, telling me that this alloy was not produced in these dimensions and that the only available size was rods in diameter 60mm.

Does anyone knows an other producer for that kind of grade?
