we have been contracted to perform a bearing inspection and investigate the cause of bearing seal failure on Worthington Wx 45" volute pumps with end suction used for drydock dewatering.
The pumps originally had oil lubricated bearing bushings ,however because seal leakage caused an oil sheen when ever the drydock was dewatered the pumps were fitted with greased lubricated split shelled bearings. They are now ( 0r still ) experiencing seal failure.
The original seals were Garlock split klosure seals . I'm not sure if these are are still in use in the greased application, since I haven't been to the sight yet , I'm also not sure of the condition of the bearings yet either.
This is a little premature as the job has not been turned on yet and I don't have a lot of info from the customer , however I thought somone may have had some experience with this type of bearing modification and had some recommendations for seal improvement.
