90 degree Moment Connection

How would one go about detailing a moment connection for a beam and column connection. It is a relatively small frame for a all glass vestibule (11'x14') Do you think I could just specify a 45 degree mitre and groove weld the W8 (beam) and W6 (column)?

What have you guys done in this situation?

Generally, without knowing the specifics of this situation, I would run the column up full height and connect (either through full pen welding or extended end plates) the beam to the column flange.

Check the column flanges and webs as required for stiffeners.

Since the members are small and this seems like an architecturally sensitive connection, a mitred connection with finished welds seems like a reasonable choice. If this is just a structural connection (no aesthetics considered) a top and bottom flange plate connection would probably be cheaper/easier to install.

The problem with this type of mitre joint is that you get two large compression forces on the inside corner with no-where to go (think truss analogy).

I had an architect suggest exactly the same thing so I steered them towards allowing 2 stiffeners in line with the inside flanges so that they form a rectangle. If theseare ground back and prepared as architecturalyposetell then it looks pretty good and works structurally.

The loads are VERY small in this, so I wasn't too worried about that inside corner thing, but it was a thought, that is why I asked for all your opinions. I'm going to use a typical end plate moment connection with the stiffeners as, lkjh345 and csd72 mentioned.

With the dimensions that you have given, there is no reason why this whole setup couldnt be prefabricated and transported to the site in one welded 'lump'.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Since it so small, they could probably just do all the welding in shop and it would be brought out as a single unit. Thanks again for the thoughts and feedback.
