A 283 gR C & A 285 gr C

Dear Friends
I would like to know what is a difference between A283 gr c and A285 gr c .I reviewing an spec and my contactor ask my to replace A283 gr c with A285 Grade c. Can you give me an advices?

ASTM A 283 Gr is a specification for low and intermediate strength steel plates (Gr C 55-75 Ksi, UTS, 30 Ksi YS).

ASTM A 285 is a specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel, there are 3 grades (Gr C 55-75 Ksi, 30 Ksi YS).

What is the difference? The A 283 is used for general application and is structural quality, and is not permitted for pressure retaining application.

A 285 is for pressure vessel applications, with specific requirements that allow it to be used in pressure vessel application.

Call several suppliers and find out. Weldability- yes, for Grade C.

SA-283 Gr A, B, C, D are included in table UCS-23. So they are allowed for pressure vessels (not for steam boiler) as long as as the plate thickness is not over 5/8" and the vessel is not in lethal service. See UCS-6.

Yes, I forgot about this material being permitted for pressure retaining items under very controlled restrictions, similar to SA 36.

In the "old days" A-283 was made using rimmed, capped and semikilled steel making processes and per 1.1, "...coverscarbon steel plates of structural quality..." The referenced standard is A-6.

A-285 could also be made fully silicon killed at the producers option; per 1.1, "These plates are intended for fusion welded pressure vessels." The referenced standard is A-20.

Just an FYI - my company is in the process of switching off of 285C because it's become increasing hard to find. For our application 516-70 works just as well and it's larger availability makes it just as cheap. But then again if you're buying a large amount the mill will make it for you.
