Looking for an Electrode selection to repair a kiln tyre made from A 551 class c Have contacted Eutectic as they may be able to match up the chemical composition . But any suggestions would be helpfull ..

What kind of damage are you repairing to the kiln tyre? Is the ring worn or cracked?

For weld build-up (worn) or groove weld repairs (cracks), you have several possible filler metal options for either repair approach that do not require a match to the base material. Lower strength filler metals may well be the approach. Either way your main hurdle will be making sure you have enough preheat applied (500 deg F) to the existing ring with low hydrogen consumables to avoid delayed cracking.

Going off some pictures sent to me ,,, The tire looks to have worked hardend in 3 places and has began to crack away ,,these compromised area's will be removed down to an estamated depth and replaced with new weld metal ,, pre heating will be to remove hydrogen to prevent cracking as you say ,,and will apply post heat treatment to try to minnamise tempering .. I realise As class c is in an anealed state the welding of this material is never going to be very sucessfull. but a lasting repair would be an advantage . Any chance you have access to the the other trace elaments in a551class c ?

Based on a review of the A 551 specification, there are no other elements stated other than C, Mn, P, S, Si (see the previous thread 330-110498.

If you are performing a weld build-up of the worn (spalled) surface I would use AWS 5.11 ENiCrFe-3 (Inconel 182), which is a Nickel-base filler metal. Despite the lower strength, this filler metal is very ductile and will work harden in service.

Spalled ,,, good word ,,,Interesting choice of electrode, very low amperage woulde be an advantage to keep heat inputs down . Thanks for you help , your an insperation to us all
