A couple of question relating to UL 508A and Class 2 systems. 1

Assuming a requirement to have all equipment UL labeled -

If a company produces a 24v dc control box that controls a 12v dc motor 100’ away and feeds the box with a UL Class 2 power supply –

1) Can they claim that the control box is exempt from any UL508A inspection and therefore should not have a UL label
OR
2) Should they have the control box designed, built and inspected under 508A and ultimately have a UL label?

My opinion (and I manage engineering for a 508A panel shop) is that your gizmo does not require UL investigation as an industrial control panel.

That said, it becomes a marketing and local-code authority issue.

Depending on who winds up inspecting the installation, since your product CAN be labeled, they may insist on a label (for various reasons). We do these often as custom panels. If you're going to mass-produce this controller, it would be better to get it labeled under its own file number, rather than under 508a.

Marketing-wise, it is sometimes tough to convince the non-UL-savvy public that a label isn't needed...

Them's my two cents. Not really cut and dried.
