These kinds of stories inspire me to do better and make me realize how lucky I am to be an Engineer. The parents worked hard to put their kids through college. And what did the oldest son pick for a major…Engineering (Aerospace) at MIT. Some dreams do come true.

Thanks 21121956, I grew up in the Bronx, but I did not live in that extreme. Back in college (CCNY) I had friends whose parents faced the same adversity just so they can get their kids through college.

The offspring of *illegal* immigrants now aids in the nations defense. Wow...that makes sense!

That great family story is not unique--the very best people in any horrible economy will have the guts and talent to uproot their lives and seek the American Dream. Success for these people has often been realized in their offspring like the folks in the story.

Anyone who wants to keep them out is a short-sighted idiot. This country has benefited hugely from reasonably easy immigration and whenever there starts being unreasonable restrictions on immigration our future suffers. On the other hand, realizing the American Dream requires assimilation--efforts to teach a public school ciruculum in Spanish (for example) are counter productive to successful assimulation and delay acheiving the American Dream.

There are a lot of people in America that understand the importance of immigration and know how broken the legal immigration system is-- but they also feel that the way to fix this is to fix the immigration system, not to look the other way when the law is broken.

Why should anyone from Mexico (or Cuba, or Canada, or anywhere else) be allowed to walk into the country and set up a life here without going through the proper channels when there are thousands (or millions) of people working hard and trying to get here legally?

Bruno, thank you for making that point. The story in the news article above glorifies those who have knowingly, openly, and illegally benefited from what America can offer. The end does not justify the means, especially in this case.

Perhaps you missed the part where it said they are citizens. Or maybe you only read what you want to?

They are citizens now because (most likely) of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, but they did enter the country illegally.

I wish them all the best now that they are citizens, but they cut in front of millions of other who want to be here, but are trying to do it legally. And I just don't think that's right.

I've noticed that those who complain the most about reporters pushing their opinions as fact are the most likely to want to push their own opinions as fact...

Guys relax before somebody pulls the plug on this thread. Immigration is not a subject for this forum. If you want to debate about it, please start another thread. The point that I’m trying to make is that some times we take our Engineering degree for granted, but for the son to choose Engineering as a career and drop all of his parents hard earned money into his degree is I think commending. The son could have picked any other major to go into, but he chose Engineering. I kinda feel honored.
