A106-B vs A333-6 piping material 2

Hello everyone

in our piping material specification we required the material A106-B SMLS (Impact tested) for a specified class (10 Inch and above)

our contractor proposes the use of the material A333-6 SMLS without impact testing justefying that this is a higher material and doesn't need impact test

what are your thoughts?

A333-6 is a low temperature material.

It might be Ok - need to check the particular material specs so a materials engineer would be needed for sign off

Design Temperature range for offered Pipe material A333-6 SMLS is -21 to 215 Deg. C and the process design temperature requirement is -5 to 90 Deg C.
 
It still needs impact testing.

This is like saying the steel doesn't need to be tested for SMYS or hardness.

Why the reluctance to do it?

I believe your contractor is stating that impact testing is part of the specification of A-333. Grade 6 is tested at -45C. It can't be called A-333 Gr. 6 without impact testing. Impact testing of A-106B is not mandatory per the specification. Often times A333 Gr. 6 is dual certified to A106B.
 
Under B31.3 impact testing of A-106B is required based on thickness and MDMT. When impact testing of A-106B is required by Code, it makes perfect sense to substitute A333-6 because it is already impact tested by the manufacturer (the A106 will not be unless a mill order is made). You will no doubt pay more to have the A106 impact tested by the stockiest supplier and there is no guarantee that it will pass.
 
Simply order A106B Psl 2, depending upon the testing being called out. This is a standard off the shelf product. It is already impact tested at +32 deg F or 0 cent.

Generally we do not charge a premium for PSL 2.

Also A333 grade 6 carries a -50f charpy. Cost will be significantly (+25% $$) higher

From what I’ve been told A106-B doesn’t always meet the criteria for impact testing, so (if that’s true) it’s more than just more expensive.
