What alloy is typically used in A449 bolts? I would like to specify a smooth rod of equivalent properties. The smooth rod would be 5/8" diameter. Thank you.

You can use any alloy steel with a min tensile of 120ksi and min yield of 92ksi. Something like LaSalle/Niagra ETD 150 would work. This material is pre-heat treated to 150ksi min tensile. Various warehouses also stock pre heat treated 4140 alloy, although I don't have the mechanical properties available close at hand at the moment.
