A514 (T1) Galvanizing / Embrittlement?

Yea or nea on galvanizing A514 steel (T1). The application is un welded, burried in the dirt sections are relatively thin (easily galvanized).

Does anybody know of a good reference or have experience? My local galvanizer can't help.

You need to know the temperature of the galvanizing bath and the tempering temperature of T1 to make sure the bath won't temper it back. You also need to be consider distortion from the stress relief effects of the bath, albeit it will be a short term exposure.As far as corrosion issues, you need to provide more information on the environment these will be used in and the stress level of the structures.

The galvanizing bath is 850 to 1,000 degrees F. The local galvanizer tends to go on the higher side because it ups his production rate. Distortion is not a problem in this application.

It will be used underground as a part of an anchorage system. The user expects to deploy the system in a wide variety of soil conditions, hence the desireability of the galvanizing. Because of the variety, there is no range of resistivity of the soil ahead of time.

Rated stress level will be 50 ksi (rated) and 10 to 25 ksi (working). The yield of the A514-B is 100 ksi.

as long as it is hot dip and not electro-galvanized embrittlement should not be an issue, loss of properties due to tempering as mentioned perviously might be however.
 
Looks like I pitched my T-1 data some time ago. You need to talk to the steel supplier and see if 1000F is still below the tempering temp for T-1. If so, you should be good to go.
 
Be aware of the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement of these high strength steels during the acid pickling process prior to hot dipping.
Your galvanizer needs to be on top of the acid bath chemistry with the correct inhibitor level to prevent hydrogen formation.
