I have a consultant for one of my customers that is refusing to allow me to use a welder that certified on P1 material unless I can prove to him that the A529 steel to be welded is not P2 material. I have been searching but can find nothing on on A529 other than that it is a high strength carbon manganese steel suitable for construction. I found that shows P1 material to be carbon manganese steel and P2 not being used for anything.
Can anyone provide me with a reference I to show this consultant so I can complete a 30 minute weld repair?

Thanks

charliestith;
I would refer you to AWS B2.1-2005 where ASTM materials are listed by M-No., and Group No, similar to ASME Section IX, P-No and Group No.

For ASTM A 529, there are three Grades listed, 40, 50 and 55. Based on this AWS document, all three Grades are categorized as M-No. 1 base materials and the Group No is 1 for Grade 42, and Group 2 for Grades 50 and 55. This should convince your high priced consultant.
